Where to Direct Jail and Record Questions

For current county jail custody, use the jail booking and visitation line rather than the Sheriff's main switchboard. For records or warrant questions, the Sheriff's Records & Warrants unit is the local fallback when a roster, booking log, or public-records path does not answer the question.

Jail mail uses a separate inmate-mail format: inmate ID number and inmate name, San Luis Obispo County Jail, 880 Oklahoma Ave., San Luis Obispo, CA 93405. The Honor Farm and Alternative Sentencing address also uses 880 Oklahoma Avenue; do not use that mail format for court filings or public-records requests. The research did not identify published public-counter hours for Records & Warrants or jail booking, so call before going in person. The Alternative Sentencing Unit publishes business hours of Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closed Friday through Sunday and county holidays.

• For someone who may be in the county jail, start with jail inmate records and call (805) 781-4600 if current custody must be confirmed.
• For booking photos, review jail roster mugshots and then use the Sheriff's booking-photo or Records & Warrants path if the photo is not online.
• For charges filed after an arrest, use court records after a jail arrest, the San Luis Obispo Superior Court, and the District Attorney public case search.
• For facility-specific custody details, use the facility pages in the footer for San Luis Obispo County Jail and California Men's Colony.
• For a sentenced state prisoner, use CDCR CIRIS because California Men's Colony and other state prisons are not covered by the county jail roster.
• For federal sentenced custody or immigration detention, use the BOP Inmate Locator or ICE Online Detainee Locator System instead of the Sheriff's roster.
