San Luis Obispo County Jail Overview

San Luis Obispo County Jail is operated by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office. The public jail and booking address is 1585 Kansas Avenue in San Luis Obispo, and the jail booking and visitation phone is (805) 781-4600. The public-facing name is San Luis Obispo County Jail, while the 2024 PREA audit identifies the audited local complex as the San Luis Obispo County Main Jail and Honor Farm Complex. That distinction matters because jail, Honor Farm, and Alternative Sentencing details are connected through the same Sheriff's Office custody system, but mail and program addresses are not identical.

The jail houses adult men and women, age 18 and over, in pretrial and locally sentenced custody. County material describes maximum, medium, and minimum security housing. The PREA audit lists eight housing units and a designed capacity of 797 for the Main Jail and Honor Farm Complex. The custody campus includes ordinary jail housing, Honor Farm and Alternative Sentencing components, food services and commissary, programs, court services, and healthcare through Wellpath. It is not the correct lookup path for people already transferred to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation custody or for federal sentenced prisoners.

The roster is the county-jail search channel for current custody; it is different from the DA case search, Superior Court case lookup, and CDCR CIRIS.

San Luis Obispo Jail Capacity

The 2024 PREA audit for the San Luis Obispo County Main Jail and Honor Farm Complex reports a designed facility capacity of 797. It also reports a current population of 406 at the facility-information point, 461 people on the first day of the onsite audit, and a 12-month average daily population of 418. The Sheriff's 2024 Annual Report population detail gives a 2024 jail average daily population of 443, made up of 385 male and 58 female. These are different official measures, so each should be read with its source and date.

The PREA audit also states the facility was not over capacity in the prior 12 months. Historical population measures should not be mixed with California Men's Colony numbers, because CMC is a state prison population physically in the county and not a Sheriff's Office jail population.

San Luis Obispo Jail Lookup

Use the Sheriff's Who's in Custody roster for people currently held at San Luis Obispo County Jail. The visible search form has First Name and Last Name fields, a Search button, and no posted fee or login requirement. Result rows show inmate ID, booking number, name, gender, date of birth, age, booking date, projected release, and bail. Expanded rows can show a VINELink notification link, height, weight, charges, descriptions, bond number, and arresting agency.

1. Open the official Sheriff's Who's in Custody page.
2. Enter a first name, last name, or both, then select Search.
3. Open the matching result row and confirm the person is in current San Luis Obispo County Jail custody.
4. Read the booking number, inmate ID, projected release, bail, charge table, and VINELink link, then call (805) 781-4600 if timing or release status matters.

If the person was booked recently but is no longer in custody, use the Sheriff's Booking Log, which covers bookings into the County Jail within the past 30 days and is delayed by at least one hour. If the person was sentenced to state prison, use CDCR CIRIS instead. VINELink is useful for custody-status notifications, but it is not the official roster.

The Sheriff's Office headquarters is also on Kansas Avenue, but inmate mail uses the Oklahoma Avenue format below. Visit San Luis Obispo Jail

Beginning April 7, 2025, all on-site visits must be scheduled through NCIC. Visits may be scheduled no more than seven days in advance and no less than 48 hours before the visit. Visitors must be approved, check in 45 minutes before the desired hour, and bring valid government-issued photo ID. The Sheriff recommends arriving at least 60 minutes early. Inmates are allowed two one-hour on-site visits per week, with one on-site visit per day. Remote video visits are also scheduled through NCIC and cost $0.19 per minute.

Visitors may bring only ID, keys, and necessary child items. Prohibited items include purses, bags, drugs or alcohol, cameras, phones or recording devices, cigarettes, food, beverages, firearms, knives, and other weapons. No entrance or exit occurs during lockdown periods: 5:00-6:00 AM, 11:00 AM-noon, 4:00-5:00 PM, and 11:00 PM-midnight.

San Luis Obispo Jail Mail

County jail mail, NCIC phone/video services, TouchPay deposits, and iCare gift orders are jail-specific. Do not use CDCR money or mail rules for a person still held at the county jail. Inmates can make outgoing collect or advance-pay calls through NCIC, but they cannot receive incoming calls. Sheriff's Office inmate-resource information lists NCIC messages at $0.25 each.

Mail rules are detailed. No hardback or used books are allowed, soft-bound publications must come from an approved publisher or retail outlet, and mail has page, photo, attachment, and content limits. Rejected mail can be appealed within 30 days from the postmarked rejection letter. San Luis Obispo Jail Intake

After arrest by a sheriff's deputy, city police department, CHP, or another agency, the person may be transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail unless cite-released or held briefly at a short-term city facility. The jail FAQ says booking can take 30 minutes to several hours after arrival, and newly arrested persons must be arraigned within 48 hours of arrest, not counting weekends and holidays. Under-influence arrests require at least four hours in custody from arrest time and longer if the person is not sober enough for release.

Intake creates the public and internal custody record: inmate number, booking number, name, demographics, facility, date in, projected release, case number, arresting agency, arrest location, arrest type, charges, bail, court date, and warrant fields when applicable. The public roster does not show housing unit, court department, or mugshot in the inspected profile. The Booking Log can contain richer recent-booking details, including court docket and warrant fields, but all release timing should still be verified with the jail.

The jail is part of the Sheriff's Custody Bureau under Sheriff Ian Parkinson. The custody system includes minimum, medium, and maximum housing, Male and Female Honor Farm components, Alternative Sentencing, food service and commissary, programs, court services, and healthcare. The Alternative Sentencing Unit handles Home Detention Program and Alternative Work Program screening for eligible low-risk sentenced participants. The official app store listings also identify a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff app that advertises inmate information and public-safety alerts, but no official source showed a fuller roster than the Sheriff's website.

The Sheriff's 2024 reporting and PREA materials add important accountability context. The May 27, 2024 PREA audit found the Main Jail and Honor Farm Complex met all applicable audited PREA standards, with one exceeded, 44 met, and none not met. The Sheriff's FAQ also publishes death-in-custody reporting under Penal Code section 10008. Those materials do not replace the custody roster, but they help explain the facility's population reporting, oversight, and operating context.
